Rob Davies ‘astounded’ by rise in car imports
Former trade minister Rob Davies expressed surprise at the dominance of imported vehicles in South Africa, which now make up 64% of the market, primarily from India and China. The automotive production and development programme (APDP) he helped design aimed to boost local production and employment, but these have declined due to various factors, including the pandemic and slow government adaptation. Local manufacturers are pushing for higher import duties and better use of duty credits to compete, while the industry faces challenges adapting to global shifts towards electric vehicles.
